Structural Analysis Engineer

The Structural Analyst will be a member of the team engaged in the analysis, design, fabrication, assembly and test phases of a project. The Structural Analyst works closely with Design Engineers to develop solutions challenging problems. He/she will also work with the manufacturing, program management, customers and test support organizations. Responsiblities of this position include leading various structural and mechanical analyses, drawing evaluation, interaction with customers and/or vendors, documentation/technical reporting and presentation of results.

MDA US Systems, LLC, located in Pasadena, California, is an exciting and unique company which provides robotics, structures, mechanisms and system engineering services for spacecraft and instruments. Uniquely equipped to provide a full range of design and manufacturing services, the company performs critical functionality on the Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Mars Science Laboratory's 'Curiosity' Rover and the Mars Exploration Rovers. The Pasadena branch of MDA/SSL has provided every planetary robotic arm sent to Mars. Composite, metallic and damped structures have also been delivered for numerous flight programs. Current projects include robotics and imager mechanisms for JPL's Mars 2020 mission and robotic arms for on-orbit satellite servicing for both NASA and DARPA/NRL. Services include design, analysis, fabrication, assembly and test of products for space and other demanding applications. Key competencies include mechanical and electromechanical design, dynamic and stress analysis, machining, precision assembly, and test engineering. The ability to work in a small company environment where the analyst is close to the hardware is a must.   • Performs structural analysis (Classical and FEA), finite element modeling, detailed stress analysis, dynamic analysis, and test support (static/dynamic) for flight projects and/or technology tasks

  • Builds finite element models from scratch, using hand-calculations where appropriate, to determine critical areas in stucture and efficient and adequete approaches for analysis

  • Documents and communicates analysis results to project teams, project managers and customers

  • Documents design details, interfaces, test plans/procedures, and processesEducation/Experience/Training:

  • BSME, or equivalent (MS preferred)

  • 5 years of direct experience, preferebly with close involvement with hardware development and test

  • Direct experience with structural and/or dynamic analysis of aerospace structures and ground support equipment using both classical and finite element methods

  • Ability to conduct analytical studies from first principles

  • A thorough understanding of Finite Element Analysis (FEA)

  • Working Knowledge of NASTRAN, FEMAP

  • (Preferred) Working Knowledge of MATLAB, SOLIDWORKS, SOLIDWORKS Simulation

  • Experience with detail stress analysis of complex mechanisms and structures

  • Experience and ability to prepare documents, reports and oral presentations

  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint

  • Familiarity with prototype or research and development (R&D) environments
