General Summary

The University Spirit Head Coach, under the direction of the Senior Director of Student Engagement and Leadership, leads and interprets the morale of the spirit team and audience. The coach creates and implements choreography, chants, tumbling, jumping, building skills, and game-day skill routines for athletic events. The Spirit Coach will lead the team as ambassadors for West Texas A&M University and helps promote spirit at athletic events including but not limited to football, basketball, volleyball, and other University and community events.

Responsibilities:

  • Direct and supervise the WT Spirit program and associated team activities and performances. Ensures the teams are participating regularly and has proper supervision at all times.

  • Responsible for overseeing choreography for team performances, sidelines, appearances, and half-time routines while coordinating with Athletics on game-day experiences, fan engagement, and performances.

  • Coordinate spring/fall recruitment, auditions, and growth strategies to support and retain multiple teams of highly qualified talent.

  • Coordinate and support the Spirit team activities to include athletic events, alumni and community events, and new student recruitment and orientation events.

  • Oversees the team’s equipment and uniform purchases. Responsible for an accurate uniform/equipment check-in and check-out process.

  • Coordinate travel arrangements for spirit teams to both home and away competitions and championship events, including chaperoning and coordinating all travel details.

  • Maintain, coordinate a calendar of events for WT Spirit appearance requests including area high school tryouts and Bucky appearance requests.

  • Responsible for overseeing the Spirit Team budget, all program invoicing needs, and the distribution of available scholarship funds to members of all spirit teams.

  • Establish and oversee written rules, guidelines, program expectations, and team discipline for all spirit team members that are consistent with the ideals and values of the university.

  • Coordinates and preserves fundraising initiatives for the Spirit teams.

  • Work beyond normal office hours and work on weekends will be required

Necessary Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Three (3) years of related experience in game-day skills, fan engagement, tumbling, poms, gymnastics, and choreography instruction.

  • Thorough knowledge of spirit team(s) safety precautions and instruction including activities of tumbling, jumping, and game-day skills.

  • Administrative skills, planning skills, and prioritization skills are necessary.

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others

  • Ability to lift light objects.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree

  • Experience in recruitment and retention strategies to support growth of a spirit organization.

  • Concussion Training certified or the ability to complete a qualified training program in the first 60 days of employment.

  • USA Cheer Safety certified or the ability to complete the training in the first 60 days of employment.
