The Role

Provides technical support to engineers on a variety of technical tasks. Gathers, maintains, formats, compiles, and manipulates technical data, such as laboratory or material test results and engineering design changes. Produces engineering documentation, reports, drawings (flow charts, block diagrams, and schematics). Performs detailed mathematical calculations using established formulas; preliminary analyses of data where guidelines are provided in such areas as trajectory adequacy, model dimensional consistency; and quantitative judgments concerning technical data. Uses personal computer in performance of analyses and development of documentation/reports. May conduct tests and record data to assist with engineering evaluation or analysis.

The primary focus areas will be Engineering and Quality for the Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) Department X83 Design/Build/Sustain (DBS) Field Office at Electric Boat (EB). X83 offices are located in Groton/New London, CT and at EB’s Quonset Point manufacturing facility in North Kingstown, RI. As members of the DBS team, we are fully engaged in all aspects of the Virginia Class Submarine (VCS) and COLUMBIA Class (CLB) programs. We provide the up-front view of issues and devote our resources to ensure the success of NNS by transferring learning and excellence through our deliverables. Our on-site presence develops working relationships critical to the success of the VCS and CLB programs. Our efforts have resulted in enhanced communications, fewer discrepancies, less construction downtime, a better product, and lower costs.

Current support functions include systemic problem resolutions and Engineering issues, technology insertion efforts, design review for NNS manufacturing, drawing review, Engineering Report management, resolution of programmatic issues, Nuclear construction Engineering support, Risk Management, Lessons Learned for all follow ships, certification support, Subsea & Seabed Warfare Design Build Sustain, and Digital (Teamcenter) Design Review. This position coordinates efforts for design disclosures, Engineering evaluations, engine room, quality issues, module deliveries, program initiatives, etc.

Must Have

Associate's Degree and 3 years of relevant experience

One of the following may be used as equivalent to Associate's Degree to meet minimum qualifications:

  • NNS Apprentice School graduate

  • Navy Nuclear Power School (NNPS) graduate

  • High School/GED and 2 years of related Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience

  • High School/GED and 4 years of non-related Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience

Nice to Have

Preferred Candidate will have past experience in working with Engineers on technical products, systems, and processes with experience in Six Sigma, process improvement, material management, data collection and troubleshooting.
