Electron is an open source project for writing cross platform Desktop Applications with web technologies including but not limited to JavaScript, HTML, and CSS. By combining the capabilities of Node.js and Chromium, it allows developers to utilize the full web standard as well as the wide array of resources provided by the npm registry. Electron is the engine that powers popular applications like VS Code, Slack, WhatsApp, Discord, Figma, and many more. Electron runs everywhere from the desktop of a software developer, to large enterprises, to financial institutions. The work you‘ll do impacts millions of people every day.

Responsibilities

We are looking for a Principal Software Engineer to:

  • Improve, maintain, and ship the Electron open source framework.

  • Act as a steward of the Electron open source project.

  • Be an active participant in Electron’s Working Groups.

  • Contribute upstream changes to Electron’s core dependencies, including but not limited to: Node.js, Chromium, V8, and libuv.

  • Support Electron usage at Microsoft.

  • Work effectively in a remote asynchronous environment with team members spanning multiple time zones.

  • Work autonomously while also actively engaging with fellow team members.

  • Have working hours that overlap with EST time zone.

  • Be a role model to create a culture of psychological safety both within the team and cross-team, where differing views can be shared and heard.

As a Principal Software Engineer, you will have the opportunity to interact with teams inside of Microsoft such as VS Code in order to improve their usage of Electron. Additionally, you will work as a leader within the Electron maintainer community to ensure the continued success of Electron. The Electron maintainer community is a highly collaborative effort between members from multiple companies and is backed by a structured governance to ensure inclusivity. The software you build will help millions of developers all over the world reach their potential.

Qualifications

  • Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • Extensive technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C++, JavaScript, TypeScript, and Objective-C.

  • An undergraduate degree in Computer Science or a similar technical field, or comparable experience.

  • Extensive years of experience designing, developing, and shipping high-quality software at scale.

  • Solid years experience contributing to open source projects, including but not limited to Electron, Chromium, Node.js, and V8.

  • Additional or Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience building Electron applications.

  • Participation in standards groups such as TC39, WHAT-WG, etc.

  • Experience building and shipping desktop applications using any language.

  • Experience leading community-based open source projects.

  • Experience with operating system fundamentals, including process and memory management.

  • Experience with threat models, exploits, and mitigations.

  • Experience with creating and improving Developer Experience (DX).

  • A demonstrated ability to learn and adapt to new technologies, programming languages and concepts.
