Geisinger Genomic Data Scientist Senior in Danville, Pennsylvania

Job Summary

Develops and applies novel scientific data and analytical tools for extracting value and meaning from genomic and phenomic data. These tools and extracted data serve as core resources for research and translational clinical work across the health system. Responsible for bioinformatics research as part of a team. Contributes to the relevant scientific content of grant applications and manuscripts. Writes software as part of a team using modern software development lifecycle best practices. Works to enhance the value of both new and existing genomic data assets. Provides support as a consultant or collaborator to other scientists, software and data engineers, industry partners, physicians and investigators.

Job Duties

  • Collaborates with the Genomic Software Engineering and Scientific Data Engineering teams to extract value and meaning from genomic and phenomic data sets by developing or implementing novel software and analytical methods.

  • Serves as a core resource providing data science expertise to collaborators across the health system.

  • Creates and shares centralized documentation and resources describing scientific data assets and related tools and processes.

  • Collaborates with clinical stakeholders and the enterprise informatics team to prioritize, translate, and integrate novel scientific data work into clinical care.

  • Supports industry partnerships for research, clinical trials, and other strategic initiatives.

  • Works as part of a team to identify research questions, formulate hypotheses, plan and conduct investigations, analyze data and draw conclusions.

  • Collaborates with other investigators in the area of bioinformatics, computational biology, quantitative genomics, and clinical genomic data interpretation.

  • Develops software and performs data analyses to fulfill the above duties following modern software development lifecycle best practices .

  • Collaborates on applications for external funding and assists in the completion of the objectives of funded external grants.

  • Serves as a resource for bioinformatics expertise and advises other scientists in research matters related to bioinformatics.

  • Prepares completed work for publication.

  • Presents research results in both formal and informal seminars internal and external audiences at national and international meetings and academic institutions.

  • Participates in training of investigators, clinical associates, residents, fellows and students in the field of bioinformatics and computational biology.

Position Details

Demonstrated expertise in the following areas:

  • Python or a similar analytical software language

  • Genomic data and analytical tools, particularly NGS data

  • Statistical analysis methods suitable for genomics research

  • SQL queries

  • Applied machine learning, natural language processing, or similar analytical techniques

  • Human clinical genetics preferred but not required

  • Peer-reviewed publication of related works

  • Experience with modern software development practices

    *Relevant experience may be a combination of related work experience and degree obtained (PhD = 4 years).

Education

Master's Degree-Related Field of Study (Required), Doctoral Degree-Related Field of Study (Preferred)

Experience
