Job Description

Reporting to the Director, Design & Brand Management, the Assistant Director, Graphic Design is a key member of the Design and Brand Management Team in the Office of University Communications at Boston College.

The Assistant Director, Graphic Design will focus on digital and print projects while working as a brand ambassador with school and department partners across the University. The Assistant Director assists the Director in managing the application of the

graphic identity system for those around the University requiring appropriate fonts, graphics, and Web templates, and offers advice and critiques on the application of the graphic identity on projects produced outside of the department. S/he is also charged with keeping abreast of new production processes, technologies, and tools that can aid the Design and Brand Management Team and the Office of University Communications in its marketing and communications work on behalf of the University.

The assistant director will design, conceptualize, produce, and simultaneously manage multiple projects of varying degrees of complexity; develop appropriate priorities; create production specifications; obtain and organize vendor quotes and/or consult with the Procurement Department, and meet project deadlines. S/he will collaborate with design, editorial, photography, marketing, and project management colleagues to develop creative marketing strategies supporting the University’s goals and mission. will S/he will also provide oversight of digital marketing projects as well as on-site, on-press supervision of print materials to ensure quality standards are met. S/he will also devise and create graphic systems and templates for campus partner's use.

Projects can span the areas of digital advertising, web design, print collateral (brochures, viewbooks, magazines and posters, etc.) signage & display materials, video graphics & animation, graphics, email design, presentations, and social media graphics.

Some projects have a duration of several months while others will be completed in a matter of days or weeks. The position requires the ability to be agile and flexible across multiple platforms of communication.

Full-Time Equivalent Hiring Range: $66,450 to $83,050; salary commensurate with relevant experience.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in graphic design or visual arts.

• 5+ years of experience in graphic design and production in print and digital media, with a strong preference for several years working in higher education or an in-house department.

• Must possess a strong and sophisticated sense of design, typography, photography, and creativity while adhering to university brand standards.

• A high level of proficiency is required in decision making/problem solving, time management, applying technology, attention to detail, working within a team and independently, quality control, and openness to change.

• Must have extensive knowledge of industry standard design software including Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, XD, Acrobat, etc.), Google Workspace, Microsoft Word, and PowerPoint on a Mac platform.

• Knowledge of HTML, Adobe Experience Manager, BeeFree, and illustration a plus

• Must possess the ability to develop strong collaborative partnerships and to earn trust within an organization, ability to disseminate and present complex information, manage responsibilities, develop appropriate priorities, and meet deadlines.

• An understanding of higher education communications issues and appreciation of academic culture is required. The successful candidate will demonstrate a high degree of creativity and ambition.
