Johns Hopkins University Laboratory Technician in Baltimore, Maryland

We are seeking a Laboratory Technician to under the general supervision of a faculty investigator or laboratory supervisor. The position requires working knowledge of applicable laboratory procedures, tests, techniques and terminology. The range of duties includes, but is not limited to: conducting experiments, collecting, summarizing and reporting data.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Responsible for all autoclaving and dishwashing needs for the Stanley Division. This includes but is not limited to: pick up of dirty glassware from labs, washing & sterilizing glassware, delivery to original labs, autoclaving and disposal of waste according to HSE policies, sterilization of instruments and liquids as requested. Responsible for calling for service of autoclave and dishwasher.

  • Establish and maintain the ultralow freezer inventory of human sera and tissue (117+ Studies). This includes organizing and keeping track of the contents of 6 freezers (soon to be 7), establishing and maintaining an Excel spreadsheet database outlining the location of all studies, retrieving samples for Division faculty/staff as requested.

  • Dispense and dilute human serum samples as new Studies arrive.

  • Perform routine ELISA assays on new Study samples using commercial kits.

  • Work requires basic use of scientific methods, procedures and techniques, as necessary for performing ELISA or other serological assays, gained through previous training and experience.

  • Must understand general concepts of ELISA/serological assays and applies basic skills learned through training and experience to implement assigned projects, and to identify and troubleshoot situations needing special attention or ask for help when unable to troubleshoot.

  • Follow established procedures or protocols and utilize aseptic technique to perform ELISA assays or other serological tests.

  • Collect data and monitor data quality and accuracy as required by research protocol. Electronically send data for posting as required by Division protocol. Maintains appropriate documentation of experiments.

  • Develop and maintain Stanley labs’ Supply room inventory.

  • Keep current on annual blood-borne pathogens exposure training and rigorously follows proper handling procedures for human tissues (e.g., serum) as well as general laboratory safety rules.

  • Monitor inventory levels, order materials and supplies in accordance with established Division policies and procedures, count and store supplies upon receipt.

  • Assist any Division faculty or staff member as requested.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in biological sciences, chemistry, or related field preferred.

  • High School diploma or GED and 5+ years’ relevant laboratory experience may be substituted for B.S.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Three or more years experience in performing ELISA/serological assays and handling human serum.

Starting Salary Range: $15.25 - $23.00 HRLY ($43,200 targeted; Commensurate with experience)
