Amazon Corporate Counsel, Patents, IP Operations in Arlington, Virginia

Description

Amazon’s legal department is looking for a patent attorney to support our Amazon Stores business and our growing portfolio of machine learning products and services. If you have a passion for new technology, this is the place for you.

As a member of the Stores patent team, you will directly interact with the business and technology teams to launch and protect new products and services.

Responsibilities include engaging scientists, developers and engineers to identify protectable aspects of their innovations; working with outside counsel on the preparation, filing, and prosecution of our patent portfolio; direct client counseling regarding IP issues arising within the context of product development, business transactions, machine learning dataset and model acquisition, development, and use; analysis of our patent portfolio; and assessment of IP risk from third parties.

The candidate will become a trusted advisor to the teams building new web services and related products, while helping shape those services and experiences so that they delight millions of customers.

The successful candidate must be curious, enthusiastic about technology, enjoy working hard and being continually challenged, and demonstrate sound judgment even in ambiguous situations.

Some domestic travel is required.

Basic Qualifications

  • 5+years of legal experience (with at least two years at a law firm) as a patent attorney

  • Juris Doctor and membership in good standing in at least one state bar

  • Registered to practice before the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Personal experience preparing and prosecuting at least 20 patent applications relating to computer-implemented inventions.

  • Education and/or relevant work experience in computer science areas such as machine learning, e-commerce, and digital content creation, transmission and services.

  • Effective oral and written communication skills in communicating business and intellectual property issues with and between developers, engineers and business leaders.

  • Ability to be responsible for patent related activities for several business and technology teams, including training the business on patent filing and strategy, idea harvesting, management of patent application preparation and prosecution, clearance, and assisting in patent acquisitions and licensing.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $123,100/year in our lowest geographic market up to $229,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
